I Am From

I am from brass candlesticks

From tea kettles and windchimes

I am from the soft light filtering through windows

The salty, sleepy spray of ocean air

I am from purple and yellow irises

Planted by little hands and loved by little hearts

I’m from harvest season and bare feet and unruly hair

From Hurston and Sutton

I’m from the early mornings and tea with toast

From “this is a beautiful day” and “c’est la vie”

I’m from the land, the sky, and the sea

I’m from Colorado and Quebec and wherever my heart lives

From pink tights and Freed Classics

I’m from the cul-de-sac

From paint nights, dance parties, and hail storms

I am from the space between the words
